Summer is a time for fun vacations to the beach, to the mountains, or to another country! But there is a hidden danger in all of these fun trips - Bed Bugs. Bed Bugs can come from any bed anywhere, and if you sleep in a bed with them you can bring them back into your own home!

So, how can you protect yourself from getting bed bugs this summer? Well, there are a number of steps that we can all take to keep those nasty pests out of your home.

One thing you can do is always inspect the bed, couch, chairs, and other furniture of any home or hotel you stay in. When looking in the furniture specifically look in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains, in drawer joints, on top of and under mattresses, and under loose wall paper and wall hangings. When looking in these spots there are some tell tale signs of bed bugs you need to pay special attention to:

  • Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed.
  • Dark spots (about this size: •), which are bed bug excrement and may bleed on the fabric.
  • Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny and pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
  • Live bed bugs

However, just protecting yourself from bringing bed bugs into your own home isn't completely enough to keep them out. There are a few things you can do to help prevent your home from getting bed bugs. Reducing clutter in your home will reduce the amount of hiding spots for these nasty insects. Vacuuming frequently can also help reduce the possibility of getting bed bugs, as it can help suck off any bed bugs that may have traveled into your home on suitcases, or other items.
